The Friends of East Sussex Hospices

This site is under construction – please bear with us. Watch this space

We are a registered charity, run by volunteers, that raises funds for and promotes awareness of the invaluable services offered by hospices that serve the people of East Sussex.

Originally formed in 1995 to raise money for building the Martlets Hospice in Hove.  Once the Martlets was operational, the proceeds from fund-raising were shared amongst hospices serving the people of East Sussex.

Distribution to hospices is based on the number of East Sussex patients served with episodes of care and length of inpatient stay taken into account

Achieved charitable status in November 2001- Registered Charity No. 1089306

To date has distributed £800,000 to the hospices

Fundraising events have included bridge drives, art exhibitions, concerts, wine tastings, celebrity talks and fashion shows and the charity sells its own Christmas cards each year.  The Summer Concerts which have taken place at Pashley Manor and last year at Firle Place have been incredibly popular and the charity’s fifteenth Christmas Fair took place on 1st December last year at Ardingly.

In 2008 the charity started work on a campaign to promote awareness of the valuable services hospices provide and funding issues.  As part of this campaign Baroness Cumberlege hosted a reception at the House of Lords year at which Professor The Lord Darzi of Denham KBE gave a presentation on his review “Our NHS Our Future” which included for the first time a strategy for end of life care.  170 people attended the event, including representatives from all nine hospices in East Sussex, cross-party members from both houses with an interest in health plus health professionals involved in end of life care in the county.  The event was fully sponsored.

Hospices provide our communities with the following:

  • care to those whose illness is no longer thought curable
  • care free of charge to those individuals and their carers
  • in-patient care
  • hospice at home care
  • day therapy clinics and outpatient support
  • quality of life through expert pain and symptom management
  • emotional and spiritual support to those of all faiths and of none
  • crisis intervention, counselling, welfare and bereavement support

Most of our hospices receive far below the national 32% average in government funding and are desperately struggling to raise the £35.7 million needed to continue their work in 2011.

If you think you can help the Friends of East Sussex Hospices in any way, please contact the Chairman, Kathy Gore, or to make a donation today, please visit our DONATIONS page – THANK YOU!
